A practical checklist for recording coating defects and reviewing surface preparation, film thickness and curing conditions.
Coating defects should be investigated against the actual process. Similar appearances can have different causes. This general checklist does not replace a product-specific repair specification.
1. Record when the defect appeared
Distinguish defects seen during application, after curing or during service. Photograph the full surface and the affected area, and compare the records for acceptable and affected parts.
2. Review surface preparation
Check cleaning and pretreatment records, handling after cleaning and possible contamination. Appearance alone does not establish the cause.
3. Check film and application conditions
Compare measured film thickness with the product data sheet. Review the specified mixing and application settings for liquid coatings, or the application and recovery conditions for powder coatings. Do not add unspecified thinner or additives.
4. Verify curing
Compare actual conditions with the specified time and temperature. For baked coatings, review the substrate temperature history as well as the oven setting.
5. Compare the symptoms with process records
Review preparation and cure for peeling, film build and application for sagging, and the relevant application and cure conditions for uneven appearance. Symptoms are a starting point, not a diagnosis.
6. Agree on the next step
Record changes and test-panel results. Use the product-specific TDS, SDS and site specification when planning repair or recoating.
